Ramatuelle and the Paillas windmills

HALF DAY
EASY LEVEL (1 hr 30 mins to 2 hrs’ walking) – Elevation gain = 150 to 250 m – 15 min return transfer

We set off towards Ramatuelle for a hike along ridges and balcony paths. Our route takes us up Castellas hill, where the remains of old windmills stand. From the 16th to the 19th century, these mills were used to grind wheat into flour. One of them was restored in 2002. The panorama that opens up before us is splendid: a stunning view of Pampelonne beach, the whole of Cavalaire bay and the Saint-Tropez peninsula. You can also make out the hilltop villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle, perched on their green promontories.

On foot from the village, we follow part of the coastal path, from Pampelonne beach to Cap Camarat. This path, carefully preserved by the Conservatoire du littoral (the French coastal protection agency), is home to particularly rich flora and fauna. The landscapes here have exceptional charm, with breathtaking views.

Cap Camarat is also famous for its lighthouse, built in the early 19th century. Perched nearly 130 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest in France and guides sailors with its powerful light.

On the full-day option, our route continues along the coast, across the Baie des Roches Bleues, before passing below the majestic Château Volterra, which adds a final touch of splendour to this hike.

Several routes are possible, between hills and old customs officers’ paths, in one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the département, protected by the Conservatoire du littoral since 1978.

In the summer of 2017, a terrible fire left its mark on these landscapes, but nature is gradually regenerating. Life is reasserting itself, new paths have been laid out, and the coves with their turquoise waters have lost none of their beauty.
