Ramatuelle and the Paillas Windmills

EASY LEVEL, (1h30 to 2h walk) – Elevation gain = 150 to 250 m – Transfer 15 min round trip

Departure towards Ramatuelle for a hike along ridges and balconies. Our itinerary takes us to the Castellas hill, where the remains of old windmills are located. From the 16th to the 19th century, these mills were used to grind wheat to produce flour. “One of” them was restored in 2002. The panorama that “unfolds before us is splendid: breathtaking view of Pampelonne beach, the entire bay of Cavalaire and the penin” sula of Saint-Tropez. We can also see the perched villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle, set on their verdant promontories.

On foot, from the village, we take part of the coastal path, from Pampelonne beach to Cap Camarat. This path, carefully preserved by the Coastal Conservatory, is home to particularly rich fauna and flora. The landscapes are exceptionally charming, offering breathtaking panoramas.

Cap Camarat is also famous for its lighthouse, built in the early 19th century. Perched nearly 130 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest in France and guides navigators with its imposing light.

For the full-day hike, our route will continue along the coast, through the Bay of Blue Rocks, before passing under the majestic Château Volterra, offering a final touch of splendor to this hike.

Several routes are possible, between hills and customs officers’ paths, in one of the most beautiful hiking areas of the department, protected by the Coastal Conservatory since 1978.

In the summer of 2017, a terrible fire marked these landscapes, but nature is gradually regenerating. Life is reclaiming its rights, new paths have been created, and the coves with turquoise waters retain all their beauty.
